Cedar Point 2011 Trip Report
Sept. 1, 2011

Feeling pretty butch after conquering Skyhawk, we had some wet 'n' wild fun on Shoot The Rapids, the Point's latest flumer. Far from standard log-ride tradition, STR uses the same eight-passenger vessels found on Holiday World's Pilgrim's Plunge and puts its biggest drop in the middle of things. It's an unusual choice, but it works fine.

Because even though the second and final plunge is literally in the shadows of the first, it delivers the skloosh in spades.

We liked this so much, we rode it more than once during the two-day visit. If the wind is in your favor, you can get drenched; the scenic dark-ridey elements are a plus; there's a cool mist-filled tunnel; and the rocky "rapids" are quite stylish.

See? This boat looks like it got nailed solidly. A great attraction for a hot summer.

(Side note: lunch that first day was "outside the gates" at Famous Dave's, a BBQ restaurant down by the marina and a carnivore's wet-dream. The ribs were great, but the brisket? Like tongue-kissing an angel. Fabulous.)

In the afternoon, we rode Disaster Transport, just for the hell of it. I really enjoy bobsled coasters, but the only other time I'd ridden "Dispatch Master Transport," it seemed fairly dull, even with the novelty of being fully enclosed. The lights were dim, the outer space props looked a bit tacky, and we didn't seem to get much speed going.

This voyage was MUCH better. I don't know if they've reworked some of the interior, but the station and lift hill looked great, all the lights were off, and we slid up nice and high on the turns. Cedar Point may never build its own Space Mountain, but this is close enough. Disaster Transport is back on my "must-do" list.

Didn't ride the big wheel, but it sure is pretty, isn't it?

We did ride Wicked Twister, the last ride of the first night, and holy cow, it shredded. With no lines, we got on once in the front and once in the back, for maximum twistage at either end. Easily my favorite Impulse coaster and in the dark, extra rad.
